The magenta lilly pilly (Syzygium paniculatum), also known as the magenta cherry, is a rainforest tree native to New South Wales. Its bright pink fruit, which is dispersed by flying foxes and rainforest birds, is not only visually striking but also edible! Ranging from white to pink, purple, or magenta, the fruit has a sweet-tart, musky flavour with hints of cloves, cinnamon, pears, cranberries, and apples. It can be enjoyed fresh or used in jams, cordials, and sauces.
This particular specimen grows beside the Bermagui Museum.
